Chief Engineer / Director of Engineering – Hotel Operations

About the role

The Chief Engineer leads the engineering and maintenance team of a hotel, ensuring safety, security, conservation and regulatory compliance across all facilities. This senior position oversees daily operations, capital projects and energy‑saving initiatives while fostering a high‑performing team culture.

Key responsibilities

• Direct day‑to‑day engineering and maintenance activities, including service standards, equipment schedules and work orders.
• Coordinate with Housekeeping to prioritize guest‑room and public‑area maintenance.
• Develop and enforce health, safety and environmental procedures for guests, staff and plant equipment.
• Liaise with government agencies to maintain full statutory compliance.
• Prepare and manage capital and repair‑and‑maintenance budgets.
• Conduct daily inspections, lift emergency releases and mechanical equipment diagnostics.
• Lead renovation bidding, define scope and oversee contractors to ensure quality and cost‑effectiveness.
• Implement energy‑conservation programs and introduce environmentally‑friendly systems.
• Monitor engineering KPIs and drive corrective actions for productivity and quality.
• Manage recruitment, performance, training, disciplinary matters and team motivation.

Required profile

• Advanced knowledge of building management and engineering principles.
• Degree in Engineering or a related field.
• Experience with budgeting and basic accounting.
• Positive attitude, strong communication and customer‑service focus.
• Proven leadership ability and experience managing a technical team.
• Professional grooming standards and flexibility.
